Pretty Blooms From My Curry Leaves Plant

Has anyone seen the flowers of a curry leaf plant? I first saw these pretty flowers in the grounds of a temple in Malacca. Only then, did I realise that curry leaf plants have flowers. Sometimes we just take them for granted, never realise the beauty side of it, only the main purpose of this plant, the leaves! The leaves are definitely a must in curry and savoury dishes the world over.

The flowers are small, white and fragrant. Yes, I did! I smelt the flowers. It has a light, pleasant sweet smell, similar to jasmine, only lighter. These flowers will eventually turned to small round red fruits and eventually change to black. Is the flowers edible? I do not know, can anybody help me on this??

  5. If you search under Murraya koenigii for curry leaf plant in Wikipedia, they will tell you that the berries are edible but the seeds are poisonous. So, better not eat it. But sometimes the seeds will sprout new healthy plants when it drop on to the soil.

  8. Hi Malay-Kadazan girl,
Wow, that was close! I'm glad that you did not eat the seeds too! You can grow curry plant there too? It is interesting, can the plant survive during the winter months?

    2. I have a curry plant in a pot from last 6 years and it gets really cold where we live. In winters we bring the plant inside. It doesn't grow much inside in winters, but it survives. In spring once the weather gets little warmer I bring the plant out and after few weeks adjusting to the outside weather it starts to grow again. I hope that helps....

  10. Can someone tell me which year curry plants produce flowers and then seeds? I bought a curry leave plant 5 months ago, its only 20-30 cm now. Should I expect flowers this year or next year? When can I place the plant outside , its around 5°c outside in night.

    1. I don't know much about curry leaves plant, but I have a one from last 6 years. And recently start seeing flowers. It is around 40" tall. But I think it depends plant to plant. I have seen a plant at a friend's house which was much smaller and it has new plants growing beside it. Not sure about the flower part though.

    2. I also have a curry plant for 6-7 yrs. I have noticed it flowers around spring time. I do not know what to do when the flowers turn into green round seeds. I have also noticed that my plant survives the winter inside but around Feb/march the leaves starts to curl up and gets dark edges and finally shed. Once I put the plant outside, it revives well, i also use this time to prunes some of the twigs in order to get newer and more branches to give more leaves.

      I have 2 questions:
      1. How often and when do you pluck leaves for cooking. The plant looks so healthy I am afrid to pluck leaves for cooking.
      2. How do you remove small baby curry plants from the bottom of the pot. I tried one and that did not survive as while removing, I really had to go deep in the soil than expected and I might have ruin the main root of the baby plant.
